Terms of Service

By using Beyond My Time you agree to these terms. They are written to be read.

Your account

Sixteen and older. You must be 16 or older to have an account, and we ask when you create one. Younger people are welcome on a Life Page as the people they are — named, pictured, remembered — and their words can be added by a parent or guardian from their own account. If we learn that an account belongs to someone under 16, we close it and delete it within seven days. If that happens by mistake, write to hello@beyondmytime.life.

Under a parent's wing. A parent or legal guardian may open a supervised profile for someone under 16 under their own account. The parent is the account holder and responsible for it: they consent on the young person's behalf, see everything the young person adds, and approve anything that would reach another person. The parent may close the profile at any time. Supervision ends the month the young person turns 16.

Keeping it yours. You're responsible for what happens under your account. Keep your password to yourself, turn on two-step verification if you can, and tell us if you think someone else has been in. Changing your password signs out every other device. We may sign out sessions, withdraw invitations or pause an account when we see signs it has been taken over.

Your pages and your content

Your content. You keep ownership of everything you add. You grant us the permission needed to store and display it according to each Life Page's privacy setting, to include it in copies and PDFs the page's people make, and to copy a memory to another page when you or the page's rules allow it. Only add photos, videos and stories you have the right to share — the same applies to anything you share into the app from another app or import from your photo library.

Whose page it is. The person who creates a page owns it and decides what appears on it; trusted people they name can keep it going and may become its owner if the account closes. A page about a living person is theirs by right: they may ask for it to be handed to them, or object to it, and we will make such a page private or help hand it over. Everyone else on a page is a contributor: what you add stays in your name, and you may leave a page at any time — what you added stays unless you remove it.

Respect. Page owners decide what appears on their Life Page and may edit, restrict, archive or remove any contribution. Do not add content that is unlawful, abusive, or that you know to be false about a real person.

What isn't allowed. Beyond My Time holds real people who did not ask to be here. There is no tolerance for sexual or pornographic content; for content that harasses, threatens, demeans or spreads hate against anyone; for content that sexualises or endangers a child; for impersonating someone; for a page about a living person who hasn't agreed to it; or for anything that breaks the law or someone else's rights. When we find it, or it's reported to us, we remove it and the account with it — without notice, and where the law requires, with a report to the authorities. Anything that sexualises a child is reported and preserved for that purpose rather than deleted.

Reporting. Anyone can report a page, a memory or a tribute from its “⋯” menu or the line at the foot of the page, and anyone who receives an invitation they didn't expect can report it from the invitation itself without an account. Anyone else can write to hello@beyondmytime.life. Reports are read by a person, usually within a day, and the reporter is never named to the page. If you belong to a page, the people who look after it hear about most things first; abuse and anything illegal come straight to us.

Fair use

Ceilings. So that one account can't overwhelm everyone else, there are limits: on how many invitations a page or an account can send in a day, how many pages an account can create in a day, how fast an account can knock on strangers' doors (tributes, requests, links, reports), the size of a video (1 GB, played at 1080p) and the photos and videos an account can store (about 5 GB). Writing on your own pages is never limited. An account whose invitations are repeatedly reported, or whose emails bounce, is limited automatically until a person has looked. We may change these ceilings as the service grows.

Links. A link to a page, a memory, an invitation or a handover opens what it names for whoever holds it. You're responsible for who you give a link to; you can revoke any of them from the page's Access panel, and we may revoke links that are misused.

Money. Beyond My Time doesn't handle money. A page can name a fundraiser and who is organising it, and can link to where people may give, but nothing is paid through us, and we are not a party to anything given to an organiser or a charity a page names.

Support, limits and closing

Support and administration. The people who run Beyond My Time can't see a private page unless you switch on support access in that page's settings; it turns itself off after seven days, and every visit is recorded. When something is reported to us, we may remove a page from the public listing, make it private, take down content that breaks these terms, or limit or suspend the account behind it — we don't edit or add to anyone's page. A limited account can't reach people it doesn't already know; a suspended account can't sign in and every page it owns reads as not found to everyone, though nothing is deleted while we look. Feedback from inside the app stays open as the way to ask us to look again.

Your copies. Copies you download and PDFs you save are for you and the people the page is for; sharing a page's memories beyond that is up to the page's privacy and the people it names.

Availability. This is an early release. We work hard to keep your memories safe — nightly encrypted copies off the platform, and a Download button on every page you own — but the service is provided as-is and we recommend keeping your own copies of irreplaceable photos. If Beyond My Time ever closes, you will have six months' notice and every page's Download a copy will work until the last day.

Governing law. These terms, and any dispute about them or about Beyond My Time, are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, and the courts of Ontario have exclusive jurisdiction. If you live somewhere whose law gives you rights that can't be taken away by agreement, those rights stay yours.

Changes. When these terms change we update the date at the top, and for anything that matters we tell you in the app. Continuing to use Beyond My Time after that is agreeing to the new terms.
