He couldn't swim far anymore so Dad carried him out and just held him in the water. He closed his eyes and looked so happy. We all pretended not to cry.

The neighbourhood greeter
Who they were
I'm the neighbour. Charlie visited me every single morning for eleven years. He'd sit on my porch until I came out with the toast crust, then walk me to my car. My kids learned to walk holding onto his fur. He was part of our family too.

He'd never seen water bigger than a bathtub. He walked in up to his chest, looked back at us, and then just… went. Swam straight out toward a loon like he had an appointment. We spent the rest of the summer trying to get him *out* of the lake.
